What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size and shape of your breasts. It's commonly sought after by individuals who desire a fuller bust or want to restore volume lost due to factors like pregnancy, weight loss, or aging.

The procedure involves the insertion of breast implants beneath the chest muscles or breast tissue to achieve your desired size and contour.

Who is a candidate for breast augmentation?

If you’re healthy and you’re not pregnant, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation if:

• You’re breasts have finished developing
• You don’t smoke
• You’re at least 18 years old
• You have realistic expectations

How is breast augmentation performed?

During breast augmentation, you're placed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Dr. Barnes then makes incisions, typically in inconspicuous areas to minimize scarring, such as around the areola, within the breast fold, or in the armpit. 

The chosen type of implant (saline or silicone) and its size are determined based on your preferences and Dr. Barnes’ recommendations. Once the implants are in place, the incisions are closed using sutures, and the recovery process begins.

What is breast augmentation recovery like?

After breast augmentation, your recovery involves a period of rest and careful healing. In the initial days following your surgery, you may experience the following around the breast area:

• Discomfort
• Soreness
• Swelling
• Bruising around the breast area 

Dr. Barnes provides you with instructions on how to manage pain, which may include medications and wearing a supportive bra. Follow his guidelines for proper wound care and avoid strenuous activities during the initial healing phase. 

Dr. Barnes and his associates are also available for implant replacement, when necessary in cases of leaking implants, capsular contracture (hardening of the breasts) should it occur with your implants. 

You should be able to resume most of your normal activities within a few weeks, but it may take several months for the final results to fully develop.
